Description
One boxed watercolor paint set, untitled, manufactured by Winsor & Newton Limited, London, England, ca. 1880? The set is comprised of 12 rectangular cakes of watercolor paint, two porcelain 3-welled dishes, a cut glass dish, a bone brush rest, two small, round dishes, a wooden stick, one piece of charcoal, and several pieces of chalk. The set is housed in a handsome wooden box that has hidden compartments, a pin-locked bottom drawer, and a hinged lid. Mounted to the underside of the lid is a maroon and gold label which reads "Winsor & Newton Limited, London" within a crown-like border. The text within the frame reads: "Artists' Colourmen by Special Appointment to Her Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince and Princess of Wales. 38 Rathbone Place." Each of the cakes of paint are embossed, some with an image of a crown and some with a mythological iconographic figure. This same figure is at the center of the label on the underside of the lid, as well as on an additional label within the box. Some of the cakes of paint are wrapped in foil and paper wrappers bearing Winsor & Newton's name. Title supplied by cataloger.
