Description
Ariel image of the Southern Pacific Railroad roundhouse on Lenzen Avenue near Stockton Avenue in San Jose. Named the "Lenzen" or "San Jose" roundhouse, the fifteen stall brick structure was built in 1899 and had sustained some damage from the 1906 earthquake. Due to the reduced maintenance requirement for new diesel locomotives, nine stalls and most of the supporting structures were razed by the railroad in 1959. The remaining six stalls continued to be the center of railroad maintenance in San Jose until new masonary building codes, enacted after the 1989 earthquake, had condemned the structure. The roundhouse and turntable were designated city historical landmarks.
