Description
This circa 1929 photograph shows the facade of the Van Voorhies-Phinney saddlery building on 322-324 J Street. Although the company descends from the R. Stone and Company, which was established in 1850, it didn’t hit its stride until 1869, when ex-Michigander Albert Van Voorhies and Maine native George A. Phinney partnered to create one of California’s premiere producers of wholesale and retail riding saddles and harnesses. With the advent of the automobile, however, and well by the time this photograph was taken, the company diversified its product line to include industrial supplies, mechanical rubber goods, boots and shoes and rubber footwear. Built in 1882, the building was razed in 1963, with the company relocating to a new 31,000 square foot factory along Richards Boulevard.
