Portrait of an colorful altar with religious statues and imagery inside of a Catholic church in Chajul. The religious statues are decorated in colorful Mayan clothing. In 1980, the Catholic Church had to pull out of the Quiché Department, where Chajul is located, after three priests and dozens of lay catechists were killed. The church was used as a military base toward the end of 1980. Even the saints were dressed as soldiers. Catholic workers didn't return to the region until late 1984.
