William Moultrie (1730-1805), American revolutionary general. As Colonel of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, he led a raid on an encampment of escaped slaves on Sullivan's island in December 1775, and in June of next year successfully repelled an attack of the British on the fort. On September 16, 1776, Congress named Moultrie Brigadier General, and on Sept. 20, 1776 his unit was taken into the service of the Continental Army. Moultrie took part in Lincoln's operations in the Southern theater, including the defense of Charleston and battle at Stono Ferry.
