This is a photograph of [left to right] Frs. Tom Gilleran and Fr. Joe Lavin relaxing under a spreading palm tree. Born in Massachusetts, Fr. Lavin came to Maryknoll in 1924 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1932. He was assigned to Kongmoon, South China that same year. He was taken by the communists but released in 1953. In 1954 he was assigned to Hawaii and also did promotion work in the United States including work in the Chicago, Illinois Chinese mission. -- Rev. Gilleran was born in Nyack, MA and joined Maryknoll in 1923. He was ordained in 1932 and assigned to Wuchow in 1933. He returned to the U.S. in 1940 due to poor health, where he remained for the rest of his life doing teaching and promotion work for Maryknoll.
