Photograph caption dated January 17, 1962 reads, "Recovering from intestinal surgery at the Motion Picture Country House-Hospital in Woodland Hills, 69-year-old cowboy hero Hoot Gibson spends much of his time reading his fan mail that totals about 40 letters every day. Gibson, who made some 300 pictures after a career as a real ranch hand, trick rider and rodeo star, now lives in Las Vegas."
