Description
Annotation translation: "In many parts of China the people preserve the bones of their ancestors in so-called bone jars. These may be left at the side of the road or in an open field. Sometimes they are a little protected by bushes. They wait like this till they can be buried in a good grave. It often happens that such jars get forgotten, or the family dies out or emigrates. It is a meritorious thing for a non-christian, if he takes such abandoned jars under his protection. If he is clever he can even make profit from what he does. He collects money in the neighbourhood to have such jars properly buried and builds a large grave, a so-called general grave, where all the jars can be put, peacefully, one beside the other. You can often find general graves of this kind containing up to 300 bone jars. On the grave shown in this picture each of those buried is recorded by name on a small plaque."
