Shown in 1945 at its Thirty-Third and C Street location is the American Can Company, one of California and the nation’s primary producers of tin cans. By the time this photograph was taken the plant was producing 375 cans a minute, 22,500 an hour, accounting for an annual use of 50,000 tons of steel. By the start of the 1950s, American – with its various locations throughout the United States – was the nation’s largest producer of tin cans.
