Certificate of manumission for Sampson Gleaves, signed November 14, 1854 in Santa Clara County, releasing him from James W. Finley. Filed November 10, 1855. Transcription (front): Freedom James W. Finley to Sampson Gleaves Filed for record (at request of S. Gleaves) at 4 1/2 o'clock a.m. November 10th A.D. 1855 S. A. Clark, Recorder. Recorded in Book A of Miscellaneous (records of Santa Clara County, California) on pages 57 & 58 S.A. Clark. Recorder. Sampson Gleaves. Exd Paid Transcription (reverse): November 14 1854 Know all men that hereby certify that the receipt of all demands against Sampson Gleaves for further services is hereby fully acknowledged in the presence of the following witness, and further state that the same Sampson Gleaves is forever free. Hra. W. Finley Witness James W. Finley State of California, County of Santa Clara SS. on this 10th day of November A.D. 1855 personally appeared before me, Recorder in and for Said County, James W. Finley, to me personally known to be the individual described in and who executed the foregoing instrument and acknowledged to me that he executed the same freely and voluntarily for the uses and purposes therein mentioned.
