Photographs by unknown photographer reenacting the pursuit of outlaws Evans and Sontag in late 1890's. Accused of train robbery, Christopher Evans and John Sontag eluded pursuit for some ten months, hiding in foothills of Freno and Tulare County. View 1 (2009-1110). Trouble begins at Evans' home -- view 2 (2009-1111). Night battle at Evans' home -- view 3 (2009-1112). Outlaws arrive at Young's cabin -- view 4 (2009-1113). Picking up trail of outlaws -- view 5 (2009-1114). Following trail up mountain side -- view 6 (2009-1115). Indians loose [sic] trail of outlaws -- view 7 (2009-1116). Posse fleeing from the outlaws -- view 8 (2009-1117). Rocky trail leading up to Pine Ridge -- view 9 (2009-1118). Young's cabin where 2 of posse were killed -- view 10 (2009-1119). Stage holdup. John Sontag and Christoper Evans, accused of participating in train robbery in 1892, fled from Sontag's Visalia home into mountains. Eluded capture by various posses by hiding in areas around Sampson Flat, Badger, Pine Ridge in the counties of Fresno and Tulare. Pursued by series of posses led by Warren Hill, U.S. Marshall Gard and others. One posse used Indian trackers from Arizona. Finally captured in 1893 in Tulare County.
