Description
Photographed in 1955 are the northern grounds of Sacramento State College. An under construction Douglas Hall sits to the left with the school's Administration building to the left. The school was established in 1947, its inaugural class consisting of 235 students. Property for a permament campus for SSC was purchased by the State of California in 1949, adjacent to the American River on J Street and Carlson Drive, and in an area that had been covered by peach orchards and hops stands. The school officially opened on February 9, 1953, with a parade of 150 cars delivering students from temporary quarters at Sacramento Junior College.
