Photograph of a large crowd gathered in front of the Hotel Metropole in Avalon, Catalina, ca.1901. The hotel can be seen in the background at right. It is a three-story wooden building with a covered porch and balcony. The crowd is standing on a wide unpaved street at center. There are men, women, and children in the crowd. Several shops can be seen in the background at left. In the distance at center, a tall hill is visible. Legible signs include, from left: "Boats to Let", "Bowling Alley", "Avalon Dry Goods", "Restaurant and Oyster House", "General Market", "Meat Market", and "Fresh Fish Bait, Always Hand [sic]".
