Description
A darkened and flooded American River swells over its banks near Folsom in January 1997. The tropical, El Nino-style storm, which left 6.79 inches of rainfall in the Sacramento area, followed similar events in 1995, 1987 and 1982. Sacramento's rainfall for 1997-98 was 34.25 inches, ranking it as ninth highest accumulation of rain for a calendar year since records started being taken in 1849.
