Description
This photograph shows Sacramento High School's Home Nursing Class of 1920. The First World War, which ended two years earlier, was a seminal event in the establishment of formalized and academically-based nurse training in the U.S. In June 1918, the Surgeon General called for 25,000 nurses. By the end of the same month, Sacramento had sent 50 of its daughters to France and Belgium. Mare Island Naval Station was also in full swing with training its own cadre of nurses. In July of 1918, the War Department dedicated itself to establishing nurse training schools throughout the country and the typical three year curriculum was shortened to two. In kind, Sacramento High School followed with an acceleration of its own nursing curriculum.
