"A river gunboat, a common sight on China's waterways in Imperial days. (This was the gunboat that escorted the Logans on the houseboat in 1901). Note cannon on the bow, and captain's cabin on the stern. At night the crew was sheltered by a striped blue-and-white tent-like canopy held up by their shipped oars. During the night, one member of the crew manned the drum, which beat out the watches during the night - a comforting, if occasionally disturbing, sound to travelers anchored nearby for the night." Captions for this set of lantern slides from the papers of Oliver and Jennie Logan, American Presbyterian missionaries in Hunan, were provided by their daughter Elsa.
