Description
Barrio Expressions was a community access television show documenting Chicanx and Latinx life in the East San Francisco Bay Area. It ran on Hayward cable television from 1976-1985. While the shows were filmed primarily in the Hayward area, they include stories from around the East Bay and San Jose. The show aired weekly, with 26 episodes per year. These episodes include segments with co-host and mural artist Enrique Romero featuring Chicano artists from the South [Santa Clara] County area; guest Carlos Lopez from the United Farm Workers talking about the voter registration drive and efforts to defeat Bill AB 838; guest Tony Casas, Deputy Director of the California Department of Corrections, to present and discuss film "Basta" about prison gangs (director Brice Mack, produced by The Institute for the Study of Prison Violence and Community Terrorism); Hayward area artist Troy Schmitt displays and discusses his art, some of which is influenced by lowrider culture.
