Photograph caption dated December 31, 1953 reads, "You won't know this lower section of Weldon Canyon in a few months for new $3,000,000 Golden State Highway is getting nearer. Soon more than 500,000 cubic yards of dirt will be pulled from nearby hills, providing base for new super highway. Area was homesteaded in 1875 by Kansas Pioneer Victor D.
