Ana Menéndez discusses her novel, “Loving Che.” She begins by describing the use of photography in her book to give the story a non-fiction quality. She explains that “Loving Che” is about a young girl in Miami who wants to get to know who her real parents were. Martinson asks Menéndez to read a passage where one of the characters has a love affair with Ernesto “Che” Guevara. She then theorizes the reasons for Che Guevara’s popularity in Cuba, particularly that he is remembered because of the fact that he died young. She talks about what it was like to visit Cuba and the Cuban people’s collective sense of memory versus history. She ends the interview by discussing upcoming projects she’s working on and living in Istanbul.
