Description
Gar Alperovitz discusses his book, “America Beyond Capitalism: Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty, and Our Democracy.” Alperovitz begins by saying that democracy is threatened and that there has been a downward trend in government doing what people want. He says in city after city, there is less and less choice, particularly in radio where one company owns radio stations all over the country. Alperovitz describes the disparities in wealth in the United States and the decline in labor union organizing and manufacturing. He believes that traditional conservatives understand that local communities need to be strong and healthy in order to have liberty and democracy. Alperovitz also states that freedom demands free time. He goes on to discuss rebuilding the ownership of wealth, the critical issue of the environment and conservation, the number of prisoners in the United States, and immigration.
