Rolland Joseph 'Speedy' Curtis was born in Louisiana in 1922. After serving three years in the Marines during World War II, he and his wife, Gloria, relocated from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1946. Curtis served four years with the Los Angeles Police Department, but resigned from the force in order to pursue both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from USC. He later became involved in city politics, as an associate of Sam Yorty, and later a field deputy to City Council members Billy Mills and Tom Bradley. He was briefly director of the Model Cities program in 1973. Rolland J. Curtis died in his home in 1979, the victim of a homicide. An affordable housing complex on Exposition Blvd. near Vermont Ave. was named in his honor in 1981, along with a nearby street and park.; Elected in 1963, Billy G. Mills (1929-) was the third African American to serve on the Los Angeles City Council, a seat he held until 1974 when he became a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. He was the first African American chairman of the Democratic County Central Committee, winning over fellow Councilman Tom Bradley by just three votes.; Edmund Gerald "Jerry" Brown Jr. (1938-) is a lawyer, author, and politician who has had a very lengthy political career. In 1974, Brown became the youngest California Governor (at age 36), as well as the longest-serving governor in the history of California after completing his fourth term in office in 2013, serving a combined total of 16 years and 5 days in office. Some of the most notable points of Jerry Brown's career are as follows: 23rd Secretary of State of California (1971-1975); 34th Governor of California (first term, 1975-1983); Democratic presidential nominee, lost in his first attempt (1976); California gubernatorial election (second term, 1978); Democratic presidential nominee, lost in his second attempt (1980); Ran for the United States Senate but lost (1982); Chairman of the California Democratic Party (1989-1991); Democratic presidential nominee, lost in his third attempt (1992); 47th Mayor of Oakland (1999-2007); 31st Attorney General of California (2007-2011); 39th Governor of California (third term, 2011-2019); California gubernatorial election (fourth term, 2014). Following his career in public office, Brown was appointed to be a visiting professor at University of California, Berkeley. In 2005, he married his long time girlfriend Anne Gust, and they currently reside at their ranch in Colusa County.
