External view of the Tomb of the Moghul Emperor Humayun showing the red sandstone building, the roof is dominated by a white marble dome which is surrounded by chhatris and minarets. The tomb stands in extensive gardens and trees line the avenue leading to the main entrance. Commissioned by Humayun's queen, Hamida Banu Begum, it was completed around 1562 and was the first garden tomb in the Indian sub-continent. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership or subject matter.
