Description
The author was gardener for the Chelsea Physic Gardens and the most respected gardener of his era. Cf. Gabler, p. 184. This is his most famous work. Under "Vitis" in the third volume of this edition there are over 40 pages devoted to the care and growing of grapes of all kinds. After naming several varieties of Vitis Sylvestris Virginiana, Miller goes on to say they "grow in great Plenty in the Woods of America, where, I have been inform'd, are many other sorts, some of whcih produce Fruit very little inferior to most of the fine Sorts which are cultivated in Europe ;Notwithstanding which, it is generally thought impossible to make Wine in America."
