Interior view of the lobby and stairways of Beacon Tavern in Barstow circa the 1930s. One of a series of hotels built by developers Highway Communities Corporation, Ltd., it opened on June 27, 1930. It is designed in Spanish Southwest style. The hotels were planned to be located exclusively along the chain of Richfield Airways beacons, which guide night airships in passage, and were tentatively planned to be located also at Santa Maria, Visalia County Airport and Capistrano Beach. Later development would be at convenient points from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.
