A woman sitting on the ground and a child playfully gaze at each other in a Maasai village in Northern Tanzania. Traditionally, the role of the Maasai woman includes taking care of the children, performing domestic household duties, tending to cattle and building houses. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
