Photograph dated April 25, 1980 reads, "The idea didn't sit well with some women, but then, the board members at the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund had been expecting some negative reaction. They'd thought hard about whether to hold a fund-raiser at Chippendale's in Culver City, a discotheque featuring male strip tease artists. But they finally decided to "turn the tables on men" at a pre-Mother's Day fund-raiser on Thursday, May 8, when WERLDEF expects up to 500 women to pay $15 each for an evening of erotica. The evening was designed, among other things, to finance the publication of a pamphlet instructing women how to collect delinquent child support and alimony payments without an attorney. Women in the audience won't be allowed to touch the men, although they may tip by stuffing greenbacks between their bosoms for the dancers to remove with their teeth. Gloria Allred, founder and president of WERLDEF, feels mothers will be particularly interested in the program, since Chippendale's draws much of its clientele from middle-age and older age groups. "A lot of women underestimate their mothers' sexuality," she explained. But Allred warns, "This is not a little tea party here; this is getting in touch with your real feelings."
