2008-3302 PRINTS-F-SIZE: LETTERSHEETS: THE FIRST TRIAL AND EXECUTION Baird, "John Jenkins, a Sydney, man, entered the story of M.Vonlong Wharf in the evening of 10th of June & carried off a safe after he was captured he was brought to the corner of Sansome & Bush Sts. where he was tried by a jury of the highest respectability, and condemned to be hung, The execution took place on the Plaza on the same night at 2 o'clock. Immediately after sentence of death was passed upon him, he was asked if he had anything to say, he replied: No, I have nothing to say, only I should wish to have a cigar & brandy & water, which was given him." Large groups of men watching a man hung from a beam of a building.
