View 1 (2011-1757). "Calaveras Big Tree Grove. The combination store, postoffice and lobby which crashed last nite under the terrific weight of 6 feet of snow on the roof. Main hotel building to right. Part of store and motor room to left. Note deep snow on roof. Photo by W.H. Wirt. Over 6 feet of snow on level at Big trees at this time. Feb. 1, 1933" - handwritten on verso -- view 2 (2011-1758). "Feb. 3, 1933. Calaveras Big Tree Grove. Wm. Russel and George Haas shoveling snow off roof of old hotel. One half hour later all the snow on right side of the roof and under me slid off and only my rope kept me from going over with it. George F. Haas was born in Westport, Mendocino County. In 1933, hitchhiked to Calaveras Big Trees State Park where was employed. By 1934 became head park ranger, serving until 1935. While working here, compiled history from original settlers to region into book, Guide to the Calaveras Big Trees.
