Numerous marathoners run past Fire Station 20 along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, one of the routes along the 26.2-mile Los Angeles Marathon. On a huge billboard along this particular route is Joe Camel, the mascot for Camel cigarettes, announcing the brands' 75th birthday. Under pressure from various anti-smoking groups, the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Congress ended the Joe Camel campaign on July 10, 1997 because it was believed the cartoon mascot was allegedly created to attract younger smokers to the Camel brand, mostly people aged 18-24. The brand's catch-phrase slogan, used for decades, was "I'd walk a mile for a Camel!". It seems almost ironic that the photographer captured these marathon runners below this particular billboard. Winners of this marathon were: (Men) Martin Mondragon, of Mexico with a time of 2:10:19, and (Women) Blanca Jaime, also of Mexico, with a time of 2:36:11. Photograph dated March 6, 1988.
