Description
Mayan women and men smile and clap at a campaign rally for presidential candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara. The women wear colorful huijiles, a fabric worn as a shirt. A young woman in the middle of the group wears several large necklaces around her neck. On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
