This is a photograph of "Brother Anslem [left] and Dr. Blaber [center] at the Sunwui [now Xinhui]." Dr. Harry Blaber, from Brooklyn, New York went to China for Maryknoll in 1935 to work with Frs. Joseph Sweeney and Francis Connors in their leprosarium in south China. After an initial five years he returned to the U.S., married and went back to China with his wife for another two years. -- Brother Bernard, known also as Anselm, was born in London, England. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1911, becoming a U.S. citizen while serving in the Army in 1918. He joined Maryknoll in 1926 and was assigned to Hong Kong in 1928. He worked variously in Hong Kong, Kongmoon, and Manchuria. After being briefly imprisoned by the Japanese he was repatriated aboard the refugee ship Gripsholm in 1942. He worked in the U.S. for the remaineder of his life.
