Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Students lining up to take Selective Service test at San Jose State's Centennial Hall. Segment 2 (silent): View through window of students occupying Stanford University office. Script reads, "The national draft test was administered for the second time across the country this morning. At San Jose State College the test came off without incident -- as it did last Saturday. Local peace marchers had threatened a sit-in demonstration in front of Centennial Hall on San Fernando Street, but it failed to materialize. This week's group of examinees was more sporadic. They showed up in small groups, were handed cards, and departed to assigned classrooms. This is in marked contrast to last week's crowd of about 1000 students who assembled in a large group at the same location. At Stanford University the test also went without incident, despite a number of objectors who had spent the night in the reception room of President Wallace Sterling's office. These films were taken shortly before 10 a.m. this morning. Upon arrival of our cameraman, campus security police locked the office door and denied him entry. The film was shot through a window. Later this afternoon, the small group of protestors abandoned their sit-in near the president's office. However, a spokesman for the group said it will continue its protest against the war in Vietnam. Some 800 took the draft deferment exam at Stanford. At the University of Oregon, only 50 of an expected 3000 showed up for the selective service tests. And they were nearly equaled in number by anti-war pickets. There was no apparent explanation for the small turn-out." Segment 3 (silent): Shots of fighter planes on display at Moffett Air Field; Almaden Air Force Station sign; people looking up at the radar antenna at Almaden Air Force Station. Script reads, "Military posts throughout the Bay Area were opened to the public today during annual Armed Forces Day. Activities began at 10 a.m. at Moffett Field, where visitors were treated to a close inspection of the P-3A Orion anti-submarine patrol aircraft, as well as a number of other military fighters and cargo planes. Until now the Orion had been a reasonably tight security craft. But today visitors were allowed to board the plane, although they were required to leave cameras behind. The several squadrons of Orions based at Moffett maintain a continuous surveillance of Pacific Ocean waters in search of enemy vessels and submarines. The Orions are noted for their long list of sophisticated 'snooping' devices. Moffett officials estimated over 40,000 persons toured the base today. At Almaden Air Force Base on Mt. Umunhum south of San Jose, visitors inspected many phases of the huge radar stations operation. Base operations Officer Lieutenant James Blaylock told Channel 11 news about 9,000 persons braved the steep road to the 3,000 ft peak." Segment 4 (sound): Burt Talcott expresses his views on the minimum wage. Script reads, "12th District Congressman Burt Talcott of Salinas today attacked the proposed minimum wage hike for agricultural workers. The proposal would raise the national minimum wage from a dollar 25 cents per hour to a dollar 40 cents per hour next February, with an increase to a dollar 60 cents per hour the following February. Talcott had these comments on the proposal." Segment 5 (silent): Rodeo action at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, including horseback riders, spectators in stands, bronco riding. Script reads, "The 12th annual San Jose Firemen's Rodeo wound up its second big day today at County Fairgrounds. The day started early with the annual Rodeo Parade downtown. Early this afternoon the festivities moved to the grandstand at the Fairgrounds. A crowd of more than 8000 persons gathered in brisk and windy weather to watch the throngs of mounted riders pass in revue. Then the cowboys got down to business. First scheduled event was bareback bronc-busting...perhaps more appropriately called back-busting. But the horsemen don't quit easily. They'll be back at it again tomorrow. The first event starts at 1:30 in the afternoon. Seats are two and four dollars with funds going to support the Firemen's Widow and Orphan charity." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Derby Day activities at San Jose State. Story reads, "The college students were at it again today. This time it's the annual Sigma Chi fraternity 'Derby Day' at San Jose State. According to Sigma Chi members, the celebration is held by each chapter of the fraternity, nation-wide. In the local edition are such events as the Beer Spin -- a complicated maneuver involving several sorority girls and empty beer cans. The object is to circle the can ten times without removing a finger (form the can) then running to the next girl, who does the same thing. After several cans and several girls it was determined that Alpha Omicron Pi sorority had more experience spinning beer cans than the others. Next event on the schedule was the controversial 'Milk Baby' contest, involving the swallowing (or inhaling) of four ounces of milk from a small container through a nipple. If a girl breaks a nipple she is disqualified. Other events included the Derby Darling contest where girls were chosen winners on the basis of the 'Beauty of the Bodies' and the 'Donut Dash,' a spirited jostling of inner-tubes." Segment 2 (silent): Pacific Athletic Conference Track and Field at Stanford Stadium. Events shown: hurdles, high jump, shotput, sprinters and longer distance runs. Script reads, "In other track action today, UCLA sprinter Tom Jones won two sprint events and ran legs of two winning relay teams to lead the Bruins to the Pacific Athletic Conference Track and Field title at Stanford Stadium. UCLA racked up 80 points to 44 points for second place. Southern Cal defending champion Oregon was third with 37 points and Stanford finished fourth with 33 points. Jones won the 100-yard dash in meet record time of 9-5, despite a four-and-one-half mile headwind. He came back to tie the meet record in the 220 in 21 seconds flat. Other outstanding performances of the meet included a meet record run in the mile by Southern California's Bruce Bess in a time of 4-minutes-2 and four tenths seconds. Oregon's Neil Steinhauer set a new meet standard in the shot with a mighty heave of 63-feet-eight and three-quarters inches.
