2008-1666 PHOTO: ADVERTISEMENTS: BILLBOARDS Shows brick-paved street (possibly East) with row buildings on far side, series of iron posts on near side. Buildings include - Douglas Shoes; Chas. G. Bradford, clothing, furnishings, goods; Berkeley Cafe; Rosenstein Bros. Above buildings is series of billboards - Sleep on a Mcroskey innerlaced mattress (Varney & Green); Bay State Restaurant; California's Best Beer. "H.S. Hoyt" - stamped on back. Possibly commissioned by Varney & Green to document their signs. Company was owned by Jacob Charles Green and Thomas H.B. Varney between 1904 and 1908. Firm did outdoor advertising, bill posting, painted signs, street cars, railroad bulletins, fence advertising. Operated in San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose, Los Angeles and various small towns in California.
