Description
Article by Charles Handy on how health, education, financial and personal service, leisure, and other service-based industries will see the most growth in the years to come because they consume human capital rather than natural resources. Handy predicts that this growth will be gendered, favoring the employment of women, so these industries need to be made attractive to men, as well. Handy begins the article stating how Country Life magazine distributed a copy of their first edition from 1897 alongside a book exploring the future of the country--where it will be in 2097. He then uses the topic of the publications to launch into a discussion of what the future will hold for Britain, stating that the rich will be very rich and global communications alongside a global economy will bring global fortunes. In this view, offices will not be needed and cities will begin to decay into urban wastelands. Handy proceeds to comment that the point of predicting future scenarios is not to trade exotic fictions of how people might be living but to highlight those aspects of the future that are inevitable, and to prepare people now for the coming changes. He comments that a divided society and a dependent society are two things that can be prevented if people start now, and that health, education, financial and personal services, and leisure and tourism are the likely growth sectors for employment in the future, as they consume people--human capital--rather than natural resources.
