Description
Portrait of Elizabeth Louise Schallenberger Townsend and her son John Henry Moses Townsend. Elizabeth and John Townsend crossed the Overland Trail together as part of the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party. Within a few years after their arrival in California, Elizabeth and John Townsend died of cholera. Upon their death, Moses Schallenberger (Elizabeth's brother) took their son John Henry Moses and raised him. Ironically, when Moses Schallenberger was a child, his parents died and he was raised by his older sister Elizabeth.
