Photograph article dated March 23, 1949 reads, "Belmont High School Principal Dr. Veirling Kersey (right), dressed in toga and wearing a laurel wreath reminiscent of Latin garb of centuries ago, stands with Mrs. Miriam Evans, head of school's Latin department, as similarly gowned students formed "picket line" in protest of the school's dirty building and campus. Dr. Kersey lauded the "strike" for cleaner conditions, thanked Mrs. Evans for campaign suggestion to set example for entire city."
