Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Fernando Award originated circa 1958 when chamber of commerce members made a joint decision to honor someone in the San Fernando Valley who best served the Valley community and its advancement. Photograph caption dated September 30, 1961 reads, "Sherman Oaks Banker Rickard G. Norlander was presented with the 1961 Fernando Award for highest citizenship at a dinner Thursday night. Participating in the presentation are (from left) Russel [sic] Quisenberry, chairman of the event and winner of the 1960 award; Norlander; Martin Pollard, 1959 winner; and Mayor Samuel W. Yorty." The award ceremony took place at the Sportsmen's Lodge, 12833 Ventura Blvd., Studio City.
