Black and white lantern slide of the Yangtze river in Hankow (Hankou), showing wooden sampans and junks on the water. Figures can be seen on the sampans. Sampans are flat-bottomed wooden boats, often used for fishing or transportation in shallow waters. Junks are studier sailing boats with flexible sails, capable of considerable speeds and were used to transport men and cargo on inland waters and seas. This image can also be found in Thompson, R Wardlaw, Griffith John: The Story of Fifty Years in China (London: The Religious Tract Society, 1906), p 220. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
