Setting up machine. Ginger barrels in the background for Philippine Islands. Hold 30 gallons; 18 staves. Made from Douglas fir. Steamed for 10 minutes. Allowed to dry for 24 hours and then knocked down and shipped. Fir heads. For slack barrels spruce heads are used. This company makes 65 kinds of packages. Factory only one on cast outside of Portland. Loss from Douglas fir oil barrels from Hong Kong to Antwerp less than 1%. Greatest demand for oil and sugar barrels. Spruce used entirely for butter firkins. No flour barrels made in west as flour is all put in sacks. All steel hoops used. White fir used somewhat for slack headings and staved. All right when dried properly but odor will come back if wood gets moist. All stock is kiln dried in humidity kilns. Temperature 150 degrees and humidity 75 degrees, which is provided by stock. Circulation of air not well taken care of and sprays will probably be put in. Stock left in kiln 8=10 days. Humboldt Cooperage Company, Arcata. 5/26/15
