Description
Photograph of a painting by Benjamin Constantz depicting the "Emperor Justinian and the Compilers of the Corpus Juris", 1886. The Emperor is pictured at center, seated on a throne, staring directly at the viewer and flanked by three robed men on each side. What appears to be a messanger has his back turned away from the viewer, facing Justinian on one knee with an unfurled scroll. The art, gilding and tapestries on the walls behind them appear byzantine in design. The men to either side of Justinian look pensive. The rightmost man holds a rolled scroll.
The Corpus Juris refers to a great codification of Roman common law undertaken by Emperor Justinian and his advisors during the 6th century. It is also known as the Corpus Iuris Civilius, in the original Latin.
