David O. Selznick portrait. During the early days of the hearings on the Hollywood Ten by the House Unamerican Activities Committee, the writers' attorney, Bartley Crum, approached Selznick and asked him to be the chairman of the Committee for the First Amendment. Selznick refused. He also did not join other Hollywood notables in a radio broadcast, "Hollywood Fights Back," or on a celebrity flight from Los Angeles to Washington, with stopoffs at Kansas City, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, where 21 notables signed autographs and released statements in opposition to the Committee.
