Description
Photograph caption dated July 14, 1956 reads "Operations officer Lt. Daniel Morgan of Albany, Calif., at wheel, receives constant flow on information from scope, right, located on bridge. Speed of operation, of prime importance in defense network, allows for identification of aircraft 200 miles away in two minutes." The article partially reads "Working closely with the Lockheed Constellations flying radar patrol duty in the Pacific to extend the nation's defense against sneak aerial attack are the ships of CONAD, a joint Army-Navy-Air Force command established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1954." The men are on the bridge of the picket ship U.S.S. Scanner, moored at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. CONAD, the Continental Air Defense Command, operated from 1954-1975.; See images #00143348 through #00143351 for all photos in this series.
