Major Herbert J. 'Deke' Penfield Jr. (center), 32, of North Hollywood holds one of the highest honors to be presented by the U.S. Navy. The Distinguished Flying Cross was presented to him at a meeting of the North Hollywood Kiwanis Club yesterday at Eaton’s Restaurant. Col. A. C. Youngdale (left) of the U.S. Marine Corps made the presentation and read the citation from the Secretary of the Navy. The award was for ‘heroism and extraordinary action in the Solomon Islands and Bismark Archipelago areas from 28 January to 15 March, 1944. Photograph dated March 31, 1959.
