During his tenure as university president, from 1921 to 1947, USC had attained full national accreditation, established a graduate school, and had severed its ties with the Methodist Church to become a non-denominational institution. During his lifetime, von Kleinsmid also served as the seventh president of the University of Arizona (1914-1921) and as a chairman of the Los Angeles Library Commission.
