Description
This baton was carried in the funeral parade for President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln's body was taken by train to 12 cities where he was viewed by the public, before arriving at his final resting place in Illinois. It is visible in an original photo of the procession in Chicago on May 1, 1865. The baton is made of a wooden dowel covered with black silk ribbon wound around it from end to end, and white silk ribbon in a spiral which is nailed in place on one side of the dowel.
