Description
This circa 1930 photograph shows a massive “double stacker” gold dredger making its way through a section of eastern Sacramento County. Popular areas for dredging included those adjoining the American River, especially near Rancho Cordova and Mather Field. The Natoma Development Company was a forerunner in this area, following a new yen for gold that surfaced in the early 1900s. Most of the dredgers operating in the Sacramento area at this time weighed approximately 3,500 tons and were over 300 feet long. The County’s last gold dredger was taken out of operation in 1962.
