Louis Silvie Zamperini was born on January 26, 1917 in Olean, N.Y. He was an American track and field Olympian and World War II prisoner of war. His extraordinary tale of endurance after being shot down in the Pacific became the subject of a bestselling book and film. In 1952 Zamperini opened Victory Boys Camp for troubled youth on a site in the Angeles National Forest. The camp operated for many years, but eventually closed. Zamperini's family decided to reopen the camp in 2015. He died on July 2, 2014. First photograph caption dated April 27, 1954 reads "Aids delinquent boys." The article partially reads "From his home at 4063 Camelia Ave., North Hollywood, Zamperini is conducting a campaign which will enable him to open his Victory Boys' Ranch in the Angeles National Forest this summer for hundreds of other boys."; Second photograph caption dated October 12, 1954 reads "Speaks in Burbank."
