Description
Nisei male, born November 3, 1917 on a Sacramento farm where his parents raised Tokay grapes on thirty acres. Woodys current home is on the farm site. The community was racially integrated during his youth and both parents spoke English. When Woody was twenty-five, the family was evacuated to Tule Lake, California then Jerome, Arkansas. In 1944 he went to Cleveland, Ohio to work in an airplane plant. Drafted in 1945, he had basic training in Tyler, Texas, was in the infantry but not in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and was an artillery instructor. Life in the South exposed him to injustices of racial discrimination against blacks but he was not targeted. Southerners identified him as Native American and ignored him. He returned to Sacramento, married and resumed farming until the 1950s. His wife worked at Mather Air Field base while he became a computer technician at McClellan Air Field base. Woody was active in community organizations including the Japanese American Citizens League.
