"Mausoleum of Prince Etmad-Dowlah [Itmad-ud-Daulah], Agra. 1234." Exterior view of the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg ennobled as Itmad-ud-Daulah (The Pillar of the State). The view shows the covered cenotaph/sarcophagus, on the roof of the mausoleum, decorated white marble tiles and carved marble screens. It was built by Begum Nur Jahan, the daughter of Ghiyas Beg. Small in comparison to some tombs it has become known as the 'Jewel Box' and sits within a garden complex. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership.
