This plane was a single engine passenger aircraft built in 1931 for commercial airlines, such as New York and Western Airlines, Inc. and Pittsburgh Airways Inc., whose names are visible on the plane shown here. "Orion" was the first airliner to have retractable landing gear and flew faster than any military aircraft of that time. Designed and built by Richard A. Von Hake, the Model 9 was the last wooden monoplane design produced by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Photo dated: June 9, 1931.
